Pokémon Summer Yokohama Kanagawa

We’ve been seeing a lot of Pikachu recently, what with his starring role in the Pokémon Detective Pikachu live-action movie and special sleuthing version in Pokémon GO. In what’s become an annual event, packs of Pikachus will be overrunning the streets, parks, and shopping centers of the bayside Minato Mirai district of the city of Yokohama, which is just half an hour south of Tokyo by train. For 2019, organizers are promising the highest Pika-concentration in the history of the event, which was first held in 2014.

Having visited the Pikachu Outbreak each and every year since its inception, we can attest that it’s an awesome experience for any fan of the Pokémon anime or video games, or cuteness in general. If there’s one drawback, though, it’s that being held in mid-August means that the weather is almost always hot and humid. For 2019, though, the Pikachus will be living the nocturnal life, with the majority of their outdoor performances scheduled to take place between 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
