The move came as more people are expected to travel by air as the state of emergency over the coronavirus is gradually being lifted in Japan. The airline expects passengers to wear a mask not only on board but also at airport terminals and inspection areas. Those who do not comply may be denied boarding planes.

Japan Airlines is also asking passengers to wear a mask but has not gone as far as not allowing those without the protective gear to board flights. The carrier has also suspended selling seats adjacent to each other.

Japanese airlines have been using high-efficiency air filters to refresh air in a plane in about three minutes. They are also taking measures to disinfect restrooms and seat tables.
