Fukuoka Prefecture is home to several interesting islands, each with its own special features. Ainoshima, for example, is one of the many "cat islands" in Japan. Another example is Okinoshima, considered a kami, or god, in the Shinto tradition, and entirely off-limits to women.

Hoewever, one such unique island—accessible to people of any gender—is Oshima Island, now part of the city of Munakata. Oshima's major claim to fame is being the home of Nakatsumiya, a shrine where you can find Amanogawa ("The Milky Way"), a stream that represents the Tanabata story, which sees the lovers Hikoboshi (the star Altair) and Orihime (Vega) separated by the Milky Way.

The island is home to a number of remote shrines that can be hiked to through the course of a day. If you'd prefer to take it easier, however, Veltra is offering a full-day chartered taxi tour of the island, including the temples and shrines of the goddesses of Munakata as well as a panoramic view of the cities of Kitakyushu and Fukuoka from an observatory. It's a perfect getaway for a small group of friends or family, and there are two packages, one for up to four people, and another for up to nine.
