When the weather gets chilly, there’s a short coat called a haori that’s worn over a kimono. While they’ve been around for centuries, Japanese fashion brand Trove has just released two new haori that make use of modern materials that provide a level of warmth and comfort Japan’s feudal warriors could only have imagined.

Shown above is Trove’s navy wool haori, which has a wool shell and a lining made from cupro rayon, renowned for its lightness and softness. What’s more, the chic, understated design is such that Trove says the wool haori can be paired with contemporary, Western-style clothing.

If you’re looking for something a little bit more colorful, there’s also the ventile haori. Somewhat confusingly, this golden garment also has a wool shell. Instead of cupro, though, the lining is ventile, the flax-like fabric developed for the British Royal Air Force.

Both coats’ two-layer construction help block the cold and retain body heat, and their modern materials give them yet another boost in that regard.

Trove is currently taking orders for the wool and ventile haori, which are identically priced at ¥29,700, through its online shop here, with shipment scheduled for mid-December.
