Ice Skater Becomes Sailor Moon in Routine
Evgenia Medvedeva was not only honored to be selected to represent her home country of Russia in the World Team Trophy in Figure Skating competition held in Japan, but she's an unabashed anime fan with a particular fondness for not only ice-skating series Yuri!!! on Ice but also epoch-making magical girl franchise Sailor Moon.
One of her performances at the event, Medvedeva decided on a piece of music the hometown crowd would instantly recognize: “Moonlight Densetsu,” the original opening theme of the Sailor Moon anime.
What’s more, she did the whole thing while dressed as series protagonist Usagi Tsukino/Sailor Moon, reenacting the first episode’s opening scenes and throwing in a transformation sequence for good measure. At moments, the jubilant Medvedeva can even be seen singing along to the anime theme’s lyrics, and before leaving the ice she mouths the character’s famous line, “Tsuki ni kawatte, oshioki yo!” or “In the name of the moon, I’ll punish you!”
Among the locals Medvedeva made an impression on was Japanese figure skater Marin Honda. The teenaged professional skaters are both too young to have watched Sailor Moon during its initial TV broadcast, but they both know the heroine’s signature pose.

And while in Japan, it looks like Medvedeva got at least a bit of time to indulge in her fangirl desires, posing for a snapshot with this standee of Yuri!!! on Ice’s Victor.
Who knows? Maybe in two years’ time, we’ll see Medvedeva come back to Japan again and change things up by performing a routine from Yuri!!! on Ice.
