Discharge Drill at Shirakawago Making Waves
Dozens of traditional gassho-zukuri houses with thatched roofs stand in the village. The scenery attracts many tourists from both inside and outside the country. The nature of the architecture makes it vulnerable to fire. A fire that broke out last November burned structures including a storage house. The annual drill takes place before winter when people start using heating equipment. All of the nearly 60 fire monitors in the village sprayed water in this year's drill.
