Supercomputer Shows How Coronavirus Is Spread

Researchers in Japan used the supercomputer Fugaku to simulate how the novel coronavirus spreads, looking at a case in which four people are sitting at a dining table and talking without masks on.

When someone talks to a person seated in front of them, about five percent of droplets reached the person.
When talking to a person sitting diagonally, only one-fourth of the amount reached the person.
When looking sideways to talk to a person sitting side-by-side, over 25 percent of droplets reached the person.

Researchers also found that fewer droplets spread when the humidity is higher. In an office setting, six percent of cough droplets reached a facing person nearly two meters away at 30 percent humidity. The amount dropped to about two percent at 90 percent humidity.

Researchers recommended the use of humidifiers and other measures to reduce the spread of droplets in the dry winter season.
