The flow of people at major train stations in Tokyo on the first Monday after Japan’s summer holiday season decreased when compared with the previous month. For many, this was the first workday back following Japan’s summer holiday season.

People wore facemasks to prevent the spread of the coronavirus despite temperatures rising above 30 degrees Celsius by 9 a.m. The capital continues to see new cases of coronavirus infection, with 161 people confirmed with the illness on Monday. Analysis of mobile phone data showed a 4 percent decrease from a month earlier in the flow of people at Shinagawa Station.

Shimbashi and Shinjuku stations in central Tokyo both saw drops of about 12 percent.
