Officials began using the new testing method at Haneda and Narita airports on Wednesday, July 29. Health minister Kato Katsunobu said the testing capacity at Haneda airport will increase from 2,000 to 3,800 a day.

Arriving passengers had to wait until the following day to get their PCR test results. The saliva antigen test takes about an hour for the results to come out.

The testing system will be introduced at Kansai International Airport in Osaka, western Japan in August.
