Rainfall subsided for a short time, and local residents have begun cleanup work. But weather forecasters expect heavy precipitation to return on Wednesday night and last through Friday.

The rain front has also spread to other parts of Japan, including Gifu and Nagano prefectures in central Japan. A landslide in Gifu has left more than 2,000 people stranded.

Officials are urging residents to promptly evacuate from hazardous areas.
