Southwestern Japan Rocked by Rains & Flooding
Several days of heavy rain on southwestern Japan have left at least 57 people dead as of Wednesday afternoon. Torrential rains that began battering the area on Saturday have caused flooding and landslides.
By NIPPON TV NEWS 24 JAPANRainfall subsided for a short time, and local residents have begun cleanup work. But weather forecasters expect heavy precipitation to return on Wednesday night and last through Friday.
The rain front has also spread to other parts of Japan, including Gifu and Nagano prefectures in central Japan. A landslide in Gifu has left more than 2,000 people stranded.
Officials are urging residents to promptly evacuate from hazardous areas.
