Tokyo Governor Koike Yuriko said the numbers have been high as more people are undergoing tests for the virus. She said officials are proactively testing those who were in close contact with infected patients.

Health minister Kato Katsunobu said he does not think the country’s medical care system is in a crunch. He noted that there were more elderly patients earlier in the outbreak but the number of younger people infected has been on the rise.

Around 70 percent of the new cases confirmed in Tokyo recently are those in their 20s and 30s. Many are employees and customers of nightlife venues in Tokyo. The metropolitan government has asked people to refrain from engaging in nightlife activities.
