Jikei Hospital in Kumamoto has become the first to take care of needy pregnant women. Half of the women who used the baby hatch gave birth alone at home, a process that comes with major risks. To help prevent these kinds of situation, the hospital began to accept underprivileged women in their 32nd week of pregnancy and later to take care of their delivery. Jikei Hospital says it will consider earlier cases of expectant mothers who do not have a place to live.
