Year-end Cleaning at Naritasan Shinshoji

About 40 monks and employees gathered at Naritasan Shinshoji Temple on Friday, December 13, with cleaning equipment. They brushed the dust off Buddhist statues and ornaments and then polished them. One man even climbed up a large Japanese drum and removed dust accumulated over the year.

Monks with brooms worked in sync to sweep over a large tatami mat room. Some of them used 10-meter-long bamboo poles to dust off railings and eaves. The temple annually attracts 3 million visitors during the first three days of the New Year.
