Producer Chisato Iwasaki grows the apples in bags so they don’t turn red. When they are large enough, he removes the bags and applies stickers to the fruit. Parts of the skin not covered by the sticker turn red and create the design. The apples are used as gifts and decorations, and some will even be shipped outside of Japan, including to Taiwan.
