150 Years of Lighthouses in Japan
Called todai (灯台) in Japanese, lighthouses have become a romantic part of Japan's coastal landscape. Nippon TV takes a look at lighthouses in Japan 150 years after the first one was lit in 1869.

Some things in this world never change. Tides ebb and flow, seasons change, the sun rises, and lighthouses shine like beacons for the world to see.
Japan’s history of building lighthouses stretches back 150 years. The first western-style lighthouse was lit in 1869, and 13 were built to make recently opened ports safer. 3,181 now stand around the country. 150 years after first being lit, some of Japan’s lighthouses are being extinguished. But the memories and feelings they created will continue to burn brightly.
