4 Popular Dating Apps in Japan
According to a study by Stanford University, dating apps have become the most popular way for new couples to connect in the U.S. While the adoption rate of dating apps in Japan lagged behind other parts of the world, the pandemic saw an uptick of singles searching online for their next romantic partner.
4. Tinder
iOS - Android
Boasting over 100 million downloads and over 70 billion matches, Tinder is the undisputed king of the online dating game (and the pioneers of “swiping right”). Because Tinder can be used around the globe, has both English and Japanese language options, and is free (outside of its premium features), it’s a great place to start. But keep in mind that Tinder has a reputation as a place for more casual encounters, so it isn’t as popular in Japan as other entries on the list.
3. Tapple
iOS - Android
One of the three most popular dating apps in Japan (boasting more than a million downloads), Tapple claims to be geared towards both casual and serious encounters. One of the interesting features of the app is that instead of creating a profile and swiping, you input your interests (travel, dining out, etc.) and then join groups based on them. From within the groups you can find profiles that match your interest, and try to get in contact from there. The app is free for women, but requires a monthly fee for men.
2. With
iOS - Android
With is a comparatively new app, but is particularly popular among young people, and boasts a 1:1 ratio of men and women users. In addition to interests and the type of connection, With uses a personality test to populate match results, with the theory that people with matching personality types will have more successful connections. It also offers advice on how to find your ideal match, how to communicate with those you do match with, and more. It’s worth noting that With isn’t free to use; it has a pricing structure, but it’s… somewhat confusing, so good luck!
1. Pairs
iOS - Android
Pairs claims to be Japan’s #1 dating app for serious and casual romance, and boasts more than 13,000 “love connections” every month (whatever that means). With the ability to match based on location, age, income, interests, etc., what really sets Pairs apart is that you can create an account using your Facebook profile (which supposedly helps cut down on the number of fake profiles), and that “only single people can register.” The app is free but includes premium tiers with additional features.
