A Brief History of Japanese Timekeeping
Produced in collaboration with CASIO, DigitalHub.JP's latest feature opens up the 1,300-year-old story of Japanese timekeeping, from water clocks to app-enabled wrist computers.
In this video, we explore the tradition and beauty of Japanese timekeeping, beginning with water-based clocks (rokoku) dating from the year 671, moving forward to today’s cutting-edge, app-enabled CASIOs. From origin to innovation, we learn about the founding efforts of Emperor Tenji (626-671) and the ongoing work of Shinto priests at Omi Jingu Shrine in Otsu, in addition to modern watch technology and philosophy, courtesy of CASIO Executive Managing Officer and Timepiece Division Director, Mr. Yuichi Masuda.
