Hashima Island looks like a battleship—hence its nickname, Battleship Island, or Gunkanjima. Located 4.5 kilometers (2.8 mi) west of the Nagasaki Peninsula, it was developed as a coal mine beginning in the late 1880s, and once housed a population of more than 5,000. However, the island was abandoned in 1974, leaving it uninhabited. Interest in the island has revived since its appearance in the James Bond movie Skyfall, and many ferry companies have begun scenic routes to Gunkanjima.

This hamburger was created in Sasebo City in 1950. Back then, the burgers were made directly from recipes introduced by the U.S. Navy, and many restaurants selling them were set up outside American military bases. To this day, these classic hamburgers are made by hand, and the strict procedures to which Sasebo’s shops adhere, as well as their handmade craftsmanship, are famous throughout Japan.
